Did you know that sea ice has an age? In this dataset, colors show the age of sea ice floating in the Arctic Ocean. The darkest blue areas on the map show seasonal or first-year ice, which formed during the most recent winter. White areas show where ice is more than four years old. Since the late 1900s, Arctic sea ice has thinned, and less sea ice has persisted in the Arctic over multiple melt seasons. This animation depicts changes in sea ice, that are monitored by Copernicus Marine Services. Since 1979, the Arctic has lost an area of 74,000km2 of sea ice per year in summer and 32,000km2 per year in winter according to Copernicus Climate Change Service. As a result of rising temperatures, the marine ecosystem around the North Pole is in fast transition from a permanently to a seasonally ice-covered ocean.
