Lipoprotein (a) also known as Lp(a) is a genetically determined sub classification of LDL cholesterol found in families who have had early cardiac events. If your family history is significant for early cardiac events, ask your doctor to run this simple inexpensive marker. Tracking this is generally unnecessary since it’s genetic and although levels can change with lifestyle, they do not go from lab high to very low levels. There are no medications to lower Lp(a) specifically that I am aware of.
