The USS Chicago (CA-29) heavy cruiser was sunk by Japanese aerial torpedoes during the Battle of Rennell Island on January 30, 1943, off the Solomon Islands, after being crippled by two torpedo hits the previous day while trying to support Guadalcanal operations.
