Do y'all know the story of Haint Blue? Haint blue is rooted in the African tradition of the Gullah Geechee descendants of enslaved Africans brought to Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1500s. Haint Blue was originally used as a paint on doors to ward off evil spirits, but was later found to have more earthly uses. Hydrated lime, also called calcium hydroxide used inside of the paint was also used in pesticides. In "The Natural Paint Book", it states that lime wash and lime paint have antiseptic

In the south Haint Blue can be seen in porches from Charleston to New Orleans and everywhere in between. The tradition is believed to have started with enslaved Black folks in the Low Country. The term haint refers to spirits than enslaved people knew to be evil by way of Africa. They painted their houses with a specific blue for protection. Welcome to Appalachia 101. Have you heard of a Haint? This Appalachian folklore comes from the Gullah Geechee of western & central Africa. These spooky entities would come in the night. The blue was thought to attract them because it looked like the sky. Instead they would become trapped and burned away when the sun came up. So people in Appalachia would use the color Haint Blue to protect themselves. Have you ever seen or heard of Haint blue? ##HaintBlue##haint##Appalachia101##Appalachianfolklo

They call it haint blue — a blue-green shade said to ward off restless spirits. ✨ Perfect timing for the season when the veil thins… and for the Sacred Samhain Retreat this October, when you’ll find yourself journaling, dreaming, and soaking in the magic on this very porch. 🍂 I love how this old Cape Cod home keeps revealing ways to hold, protect, and inspire those who gather here. This retreat isn’t just about ceremony and transformation — it’s about coming home to yourself in a place that fee

Have you ever been to the South and wondered why you see porches painted blue? That is ‘haint blue’ 🎨and painting the ceiling, or an entire house, this color is a practice that dates back to the 18th century, and the tradition originated from the Gullah Geechee culture, descendants of enslaved West Africans. The belief was that painting the porch ceiling in a pale blue shade would repel evil spirits known as “haints” which is also an alternative spelling of “haunt.” 👻 The practice eventually s
