The origins of the reefer jacket go back to the 18th century British Royal Navy. The name comes from sailors who would “reef” or furl the sails! Traditionally double breasted to give double thickness across the chest in typical naval style and with buttons either side so ropes hauled through the chest don’t rip off the buttons.
