Have you ever seen a baby numbat? How cute are they! 😍 Perth Zoo is home to four adorable new babies of Western Australia's faunal emblem. Mother Maia gave birth to the healthy female joeys – the first to be born this year! The Zoo said that with only approximately 1,000 numbats left in the wild, this birth means goes beyond the cute and fuzzy. "We're the only Zoo in the world breeding numbats for release to bolster their wild population numbers and help save this species from extinction," they

Wait for it! 😯 Numbats aren’t your typical marsupial mums! Unlike most marsupials, they don’t have a pouch. Their tiny joeys cling to their belly as she scurries around, munching through up to 20,000 termites a day. 🐜 We are the ONLY zoo in the world to breed endangered Numbats. Since 1993, we have released 321 numbats through our breed-for-release program. With fewer than 1,500 left in the wild, every joey truly matters. #NationalScienceWeek #ScienceWeek | Perth Zoo

Some of Perth Zoo's cutest marsupials stepped out to say hello. The zoo’s cameras captured several curious numbat joeys venturing out of their burrows to explore their surroundings. Perth Zoo is the only place in the world that breeds these endangered joeys, with only about 2,000 remaining in the wild. Perth Zoo | 10 News Perth

How do you tell Numbat joeys apart? Just look at the stripes! 🐾 Here’s a glimpse behind-the-scenes at a joey weigh-in this spring. Our animal carers take quick snaps of their little stripey backs before putting them on the scales. Each stripe pattern is unique and helps us keep accurate and valuable records on the growth of each individual. Later in the year, some of these joeys will be released into wild habitat as part of our collaborative breed-for-release program. Happy World Numbat Day! 😍

Have you ever seen a yawning numbat? Just before coronavirus travel restrictions, wildlife photographer Mark Jackman headed out to Boyagin Nature Reserve, about 130km south-east of Perth, and captured this elusive shot. Mr Jackman said he and his partner drove in first gear for hours, eyes peeled for numbats. "This one was just sitting on top of a log and we stopped, and it just dropped into that log and it just kept on poking its head out for about 20 minutes. It was really curious about us," h

Happy #NationalVolunteerWeek! We are SO lucky to have the best volunteers ever 🐾 Our Docents interact with visitors, create animal enrichment, harvest termites for Numbat meals, assist with education programs, weddings and events... the list never ends! They are such an important piece of the Zoo puzzle and we couldn't do what we do without them 💚 To celebrate #NVW2025, we asked a bunch of staff around the Zoo to send some love to the Docents. Here's what they had to say ❤️ | Perth Zoo
