The largest basking shark recorded was around 12m in length, although this individual was nowhere near that it was pretty sizeable. The boat in the background is 9.5m and not too far back. Sometimes we see individuals like this but we can also see sharks in large aggregations of 20 . Here's a really nice example demonstrating the swallowing phase of a basking shark feeding. At the start you can see what looks like chewing but this is the shark gulping back the plankton that had collected on its gill rakers.
