Morgan Sexton cut his first banjo from a lard bucket and learned to play as a child. After a lifetime in the coal mines, he made his public debut at the Seedtime on the Cumberland festival in 1988 at the age of 77. National recognition followed quickly, and in 1991 he received the NEA National Heritage Award for his “amazingly pure and unaffected singing and playing style,” shortly before his death that same year. Today, we remember his legacy. Happy birthday, Morgan — your music lives on today.
