“Artificial intelligence” (AI), as used here, refers to a machine-based system that can make predictions, recommendations, or decisions. When used responsibly, it is a powerful technology that can improve federal government operations and service delivery.

The OPM Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) has created an inventory of OPM AI use cases that satisfies the executive order requirements and increases awareness of AI initiatives. Below, we highlight some AI use cases and provide the complete inventory.

OPM seeks to utilize AI across the agency in accordance with relevant statute and policy, to include Executive Order 14110 (AI EO) and OMB Memorandum 24-10 (OMB M 24-10). As required by the AI EO, OPM named an acting Chief AI Officer (CAIO)—its current Chief Information Officer—on December 4, 2023.
