Nearly a decade ago, neighboring counties, Guadalupe and Comal, installed flood sirens. Nearby New Braunfels regularly tests its outdoor warning system, which is designed to alert residents to flash floods that are common in the area. But in Kerr County, officials admitted over the weekend that no such system exists.

Kerr County, Texas Judge Rob Kelly told a reporter that the county does not have a warning system, saying that "no one knew this kind of flood was coming."

A combination of steep terrain, shallow soil and a moisture-laden weather system that stalled over the Texas Hill Country caused the flash floods that killed at least 79 people Friday. The weather system that caused the flooding was fueled by moist air from the coastal plain that swept up the Hill Country’s steep cliffs,

Barry dissipated as a tropical depression four days before its remnants helped trigger the deadly Texas flash flood. And it's far from the only example of deadly inland flooding we've seen.

Kerr County, Texas and national search and rescue operations will continue Monday around the Guadalupe River, where families wait for news of their loved ones.

The Texas summer camp where children died in flooding is in an area meteorologists refer to as "Flash Flood Alley."
