In the wake of new tariffs, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce announced Monday that its senior leadership met with U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson and emphasized the importance of a stable trade relationship between Mexico and the United States.

The Trump administration is adding a 17 percent tariff to a year-round grocery store staple, while funneling more business to domestic tomato growers, largely in Florida.

While Mexico was spared from Trump's so-called "Liberation Day" tariff rollout on April 2, the 30% rate for the E.U. is 10 percentage points higher than what the president said he would apply to America's largest trading partner in April but lower than his mid-May threat of 50%.

The two countries are aiming for a 1 August deal even after Trump announced a new 35% tariff on imports from Canada last week.

The tariffs are likely to inflame tensions with one of the largest U.S. trading partners.
