The Houston Independent School District is planning to close an undetermined number of schools by the end of the 2026-27 school year due to declining enrollment in the district.
Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles said the district is projecting roughly $2.1 billion in expenditures while taking in around $2.07 billion in revenue for the 2025-26 school year.
"With ongoing teacher shortages nationwide, HISD is offering some of the highest salaries in the country," the district said.
