Freakier Friday' gets slammed by critics, but Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' film still score a major milestone.

“ Weapons ,” a twisty horror film about a group of missing children, and “ Freakier Friday ,” a body swap comedy, delivered a potent one-two punch at the box office this weekend, lifting ticket sales as summer movie season draws to a close.

Whatever mysterious power made those kids run away in Weapons must have also lent some of its black magic to Warner Bros. The studio extended its unprecedented turnaround this weekend with its seventh number one opening of the year.

Although actors are often advised not to read the reviews, one critic’s takedown of Freakier Friday caught Jamie Lee Curtis‘ attention. The Oscar winner, who reprises her role as Tess Coleman, recently called out Time critic Stephanie Zacharek for her “harsh” review of the Disney body-swap sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday.

Freakier Friday is a follow-up to the original Freaky Friday, which sees mother Tess (Curtis) and daughter Anna ( Lindsay Lohan) swap bodies, which ultimately helps strengthen their relationship. In its sequel, viewers see another body swap, but this time, it adds a multigenerational twist. Chad Michael Murray also returns in the film.
