The North Texas region is under critical or extreme fire threats on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. As a result of those very high winds, and also extremely low relative humidity, a red flag warning is in place for most of North Texas from 11 a.

A red flag warning is different than a fire warning. A red flag warning means conditions exist that could lead to a wildfire. A fire warning is issued when there is an active fire spreading that is threatening life and property.

“Exceptionally dangerous” fire weather conditions will develop over North Texas on Friday, March 14, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth.

In Oklahoma, red flag warnings are issued when conditions such as high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds create a heightened risk of wildfires, urging residents to take extra precautions.

Many wildfires in eastern Oklahoma have already sparked this March, and this week, the state will begin moving toward ‘extreme’ wildfire level risk.

According to the National Weather Service, a lack of rain over the last couple of years has led to extreme drought. Dry vegetation creates a tinder box for wildfires. Embers jump quickly with strong winds, and with extreme drought it doesn't take much for a wildfire to spread.
