A kayaker is lucky to be alive after being swallowed by a humpback whale off the coast of Chilean Patagonia and getting spit out by the leviathan.

An incredible video has surfaced showing a humpback whale swallowing a kayaker whole—seconds later the man was spat back out and he lived to tell the story. In the remarkable encounter off the coast of Chilean Patagonia,

“I thought I was dead,” Adrián told The Associated Press. “I thought it had eaten me, that it had swallowed me.” He described the “terror” of those few seconds and explained that his real fear set in only after resurfacing, fearing that the huge animal would hurt his father or that he would perish in the frigid waters.

A kayaker off the Chilean Patagonia had a very close encounter with a humpback whale. On Feb. 9, Adrian Simancas, 24, was kayaking with his father, Dell Simancas, in the Bahía El Águila area of Chile, near the San Isidro Lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan, when the pair spotted a whale. The whale then briefly “gulped” up Adrian and his kayak.
