Just weeks after Gov. Ron DeSantis first used the term in a state document, legislation designating the Gulf of America advance in the Legislature.

In a move echoing President Trump’s call to “restore names that honor American greatness,” Florida lawmakers took the first legislative steps Tuesday to replace the Gulf of Mexico with the “Gulf of America” in state laws and educational materials.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The so-called “Gulf of America” bill cleared a hurdle in the Florida Legislature on Tuesday. SB 1058 moved forward with a six to one vote in the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is the latest Florida agency to announce plans to implement the name "Gulf of America."
