Ontario Premier Doug Ford held his first meeting with incoming Prime Minister Mark Carney since Carney's election as Liberal Party leader.

Ford called Tuesday for cooler heads to prevail in the United States’ trade war against Canada, which ratcheted up earlier in the day with U.S. President Donald Trump announcing he would double impending tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada to 50 per cent in response to Ontario’s electricity surcharge.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford met with prime minister-designate Mark Carney and spoke to his fellow premiers ahead of his trip to Washington, D.C. on Thursday. Ford and others will meet with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to talk trade amid the ongoing tariff war.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he will double the tariff on steel and aluminum imports coming from Canada in response to Ontario’s surcharge on electricity it exports to the United States. Trump says 50 per cent tariffs will be placed on Canadian steel and aluminum on Wednesday.
