While Mohamed Soliman occupies a cell in Boulder County Jail in Colorado, hundreds of miles away, his wife and five children are also in detention, at the hands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"There is no precedent in the history of the United States for the type of collective family-based punishment," Eric Lee, an attorney for Soliman's wife and kids, said.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman has been charged with a federal hate crime and state counts of attempted murder in Sunday’s attack.
