Forecasters say New Jersey can expect some rain showers Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night, possibly changing to scattered snow showers or flurries on Thursday.

The January we all know — and don't really love — is moving in midweek. Several waves of cold air settle in and each is colder than the last.

Scattered rain showers filtering in this morning will linger into the afternoon.

Moisture left over and not dried off from gusty winds after the snow falls could freeze overnight as temperatures drop to the 10s and low 20s by Thursday morning. Patchy black ice is possible, primarily on bridges and overpasses.

As the fast-moving clipper continues to head south, the cold front behind the system will become the primary driver for the rain and snow.

The next round of winter weather is on the way for the U.S., impacting at least 25 states and potentially causing snow showers as far south as North Carolina and Tennessee.

Forecasters are tracking the threat of snow from a winter storm late next week, though much uncertainty remains.
