U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent encouraged Canada on Friday to follow Mexico in matching U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods as the two U.S. neighbors sought to avoid punishing 25% U.S. tariffs due on Tuesday over fentanyl trafficking.

As traders worldwide wait to see if U.S. President Donald Trump once again holds off on putting new tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the head of the U.S. Treasury Department has highlighted one potentially promising avenue for America’s neighbors.

The president also said he would impose an additional 10 percent tariff on China as he tries to force other countries to take more action on drug shipments.
