For round-robin games, overtime will be held in a 10-minute, 3-on-3 sudden-death period, followed by a three-round shootout. In the final, full 20-minute, five-on-five periods will be played until a goal scored.

The tournament features NHL players from four hockey powers — the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden — competing in a round-robin format. It has replaced this year's All-Star game and is being used partially as a build-up to the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be the first including NHL players since 2014.

Instead of an All-Star Weekend, the NHL will hold the 4 Nations Face-Off — a tournament between four of the world’s top hockey powers.
