PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cities large and small were preparing for major demonstrations Saturday across the U.S. against President Donald Trump, as officials urge calm, National Guard troops mobilize and Trump attends a military parade in Washington to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary.
As many as 2,000 protests are planned across the country. Organizers say they’re meant as a counteraction to Trump’s lavish parade, which also happens to fall on his birthday.
Protests erupted across the U.S. earlier this week, in response to the raids against undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles. At times, the demonstrations took a violent turn as self-driving Waymo taxis were set on fire and concrete was hurled at law enforcement officers.
Police in Sonoma and Napa counties are preparing as North Bay protesters join a nationwide wave of No Kings Day rallies.
The nationwide protests are meant to counter the Army’s anniversary celebration, the AP said, though no protests are scheduled to he held in Washington, D.C. "The group says it will 'make action everywhere else the story of America that day,'" the AP reported.
